'Treasure Base of The Nation'
River state was created in 1967 out of the old Eastern Region. She is endowed with strategic natural resources - oil and gas - which constitute the mainstay of Nigeria's national economy. Almost every local government area in the state has crude oil and gas deposits in commercially viable quantities. This explains the large presence of oil prospecting multi-nationals in the state.

Port Harcourt, the State capital, is known throughout Nigeria as the Garden City, because of its beautiful layout and topography.
